All I have is a Voice Horizontal Line

“All I have is a Voice…”

How often do we underestimate the power of the student voice?

How often do we let thoughts of not being the best speaker, the best writer, or the best student prevent us from speaking out?

How often do we forget that our own voice is unique and that we all have something to say?

For those of you who are ready to speak out, and for those of you who are hesitant to share your voice, here is a chance to forget your insecurities and to stand for something that you believe in.

We are compiling a book of student voices and are looking for essays, creative narratives, poems, song lyrics, pictures, artwork-basically anything in the area of writing, photography, or art-that deals with an issue in our world today.  The issue can be personal, local, regional, national, or global, but it doesn’t have to be technically “political.”  You could write about an experience you’ve had, such as the fear of speaking out, difficulties with financial aid, or feeling inhibited by a learning disability.  You could write about the benefits of community service or protective places like the Women’s Shelter.  You could write a response to one of the essays in RCTC’s common book, The Impossible Will Take a Little While, by Paul Loeb.  Basically, this is open to what you want it to be and is a chance for you to USE YOUR VOICE!

Submissions must be less than 2,000 words and swearing must be kept to a minimum.  Submissions must be labeled with a title, your full name, address, a contact number, and email address.  You may submit your work through one of the following ways:

1.      Email it as an attachment to Johanna Fuenning at JFuenn065@acad.roch.edu

2.       Copy it to a CD and drop it off at room ST211 on Mondays and Wednesdays from November 8, 2006 to December 13, 2006 between 3:00pm and 4:30 pm.  After December 13th, all submissions must be submitted through option #1.

All submissions must be received by December 31, 2006.

Depending on the number of submissions we receive, not all will be chosen for the book.  Don’t let this stop you from submitting!  Even if your work is not printed in the book, it will still be published online.  You will be notified through your email once your submission has been received.  If your piece is chosen for the book, you will be notified by February 1, 2007.
